Metamorphosis

The original canvas measures 99.5cm x 79.5cm. I painted this pregnancy art in response to the metamorphosis brought about by my own pregnancy and the birth of my son. The butterflies represent the transformation of the woman’s consciousness through the creation of new life. It was a transformation I was unaware of, it is not something that is discussed or acknowledged in our culture, with the result that this transformation can often manifest negatively in the form of postnatal depression. We have no frame of reference in which to contextualise the deep and profound changes brought about in us by motherhood.

Creating pregnancy art was a way for me to express my own metamorphosis as I celebrated the female body’s power to create, the divine feminine, depicting the female body as sacred through goddess art.
